MOSCOW. Dec 3 (Interfax-AVN) - The deputy envoy of the al Qaeda terrorist network to the North Caucasus has been killed in Ingushetia, the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) reported.
"Arab mercenary Marwan was killed during a security operation on the territory of Ingushetia on November 25," an FSB spokesman told Interfax on Friday.
Among the militants, Marwan was known as Abu Khabib, "The White Arab," Akhmed Sambiyev, and "Turk Murat," he said.
Marwan was killed after he opened fire on security units that were attempting to detain him, the spokesman said. "His body was identified by his widow Z. V. Khadzhiyeva," he said.
Marwan's bodyguard was detained and the Ingush prosecutor's office has opened a criminal case against him, he said.
Marwan, who was one of guerrilla leader Khattab's close associates, was involved in militant operations in Chechnya since 2000. In 2001-2002, he led a unit of mercenaries from the Middle East and Central Asia, the spokesman said. He was responsible for training young militants and distributing funds arriving from terrorist centers abroad, the spokesman said.
