TBILISI. Dec 3 (Interfax-AVN) - Advisor to the Latvian defense minister Romualdas Razuks will represent NATO in Transcaucasia on a permanent basis, a high-ranking official of the Georgian Defense Ministry said on Friday.
"His office is likely to open in Tbilisi already in December," the official told Interfax-Military News Agency.
"Though the office will be located in Tbilisi, it will cover not only Georgia, but also Armenia and Azerbaijan," he stressed.
"The opening of the office and the appointment of the representative are extremely important for Georgia as far as escalation of cooperation with NATO is concerned," the official noted.
Razuks, 49, used to work as deputy speaker of the Latvian Seimas (parliament).
The decision to appoint NATO liaison officers in Transcaucasia and Central Asia and to establish the position of NATO special representative for these regions was made at the NATO summit in Istanbul in June this year. Robert Simmons, NATO Deputy Assistant Secretary General, has been appointed NATO Special Representative for Transcaucasia and Central Asia. He will visit nations of the regions regularly.
