Russian strategic aviation to take on more tasks in 2005 - commander

ENGELS. Dec 3 (Interfax-AVN) - Russia is to broaden the brief of its strategic aviation units from 2005, Air Force Commander-in-Chief Vladimir Mikhailov said.

"Flights will take place over the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans," Mikhailov told journalists in the Saratov region on Friday.

"The Air Force shows a high level of combat readiness and is prepared to perform any duties in line with its mission," he said.

During his visit to the Engels air base earlier on Friday, Mikhailov presented the 22nd heavy bomber division with the defense minister's pennant. The division was recognized as the best strategic aviation unit.
