Ukrainian peacekeepers prevent Iraqi militants’ attack

KYIV. Dec 7 (Interfax-AVN) - A Ukrainian military patrol has prevented Iraqi militants' attack on the only bridge connecting the two parts of the town of Al Kut, the Ukrainian Defense Ministry's press service reported on Tuesday.

The peacekeepers obtained information on the militants' plans to attack the bridge from local residents, a press service official told Interfax-Military News Agency. A reconnaissance company of the 7th Ukrainian detached mechanized brigade immediately sent a patrol headed by Major Kadyr Sadayev for the bridge.

The patrol found a well-equipped firing position on the roof of a ruined house. They also found three portable antitank grenade launchers and ammunition for them. The arms were ready for use, and the militants were able to open aimed fire at Al Kut's only bridge across the Tigris at the set time.
