Georgian police stop peacekeeper vehicle in S. Ossetia

MOSCOW. Dec 8 (Interfax-AVN) - Georgian police stopped a vehicle carrying Russian peacekeepers in the Georgian-South Ossetian conflict zone.

"A Ural truck belonging to the Russian battalion incorporated in the Joint Peacekeeping Forces in the conflict zone was illegally stopped by Georgian police in the community of Tkviavi on Tuesday evening," peacekeeping forces spokesman Erdni Natyrov told Interfax-Military News Agency by telephone from Tskhinvali.

"The policemen stopped the peacekeepers in an extremely rude manner, and in violation of all documents on the peacekeepers' activity concluded in 1992 and 1994, attempted to drive the Ural to a customs terminal in Gori," he said.

"The seizure of the vehicle was prevented only after peacekeeping forces commander Major General Marat Kulakhmetov's personal intervention," Natyrov said.

He noted that the truck loaded with food and firewood was heading for the locality of Artsevi, where a Russian peacekeeping post is stationed.

Kulakhmetov had to send an address to the Georgian foreign minister and co-chairmen of the Joint Control Commission on Wednesday to resolve the situation.

"In his address, Major General Kulakhmetov informed the Georgian foreign minister and the Joint Control Commission co-chairmen on the obstacles that the Georgian police cause to peacekeepers and stressed the necessity to put Georgian police activity in the framework of laws and accords on the peacekeepers' mandate in the region," Natyrov said.
