Blast prevented in Grozny

KHANKALA. Dec 17 (Interfax-AVN) -- Law enforcement officials destroyed an improvised explosive device planted near a bus stop on Staropromyslovskoye highway in Grozny, spokesman for the federal forces in the North Caucasus Major General Ilya Shabalkin told Interfax on Friday.

A guerrilla from Doku Umarov's unit has been detained in the village of Valerik in Achkhoi-Martan district, Shabalkin said. He is suspected of involvement in a number of terrorist attacks against federal troops and civilians. The militant has already admitted to having blown up a truck carrying federal servicemen in June 2004.

One of the guerrillas detained in the republic over the past 24 hours has disclosed the whereabouts of a cache with weapons, ammunition and explosives.

A provisional base for riot police units from the Rostov region was attacked on Friday, Chechen Interior Ministry sources told Interfax.

"Riot police units opened fire in response, forcing the assailants to retreat," a source said. None of the police officers were injured in the fighting.
