Nalchik attack intended to spread panic - official

NALCHIK. Dec 17 (Interfax-South) - Oleg Shandirov, secretary of the Security Council in Kabardino-Balkaria, a Russian internal republic in the North Caucasus, told reporters that the Tuesday attack on the Drug Control Service office in Nalchik had been planned thoroughly so as to spread panic in the republic and demonstrate the ineptitude of the authorities.

"Some would like to involve our republic into a whirlwind of strife and destroy peace and stability," he said.

Kabardino-Balkarian law enforcement agencies, aided by specialists from Moscow, are looking for the criminals who killed four drug control officers and looted over 250 firearms in the attack, Shandirov said.
