Georgian border guard department operations disrupted by power cut

TBILISI. Dec 21 (Interfax-AVN) - Regular functioning of the Georgian Interior Ministry's border guard department has been disrupted as the electric energy provider cut off supplies due to the department's debts, a source in the department told Interfax-Military News Agency on Tuesday.

"As far as quick response is concerned, discharge of duties is next to impossible," the source said.

"The Control Center, which must operate round the clock, has been disconnected, and such units as the aviation detachment and the quick response detachment are paralyzed," he noted.

"The department's debt for the past two years amounts to 80,000 Georgian laris (about $45,000)," the source stressed.

Top brass of the department have asked Prime Minister Zurab Zhvania for help, because it is up to the Finance Ministry to repay the debt to the electric energy provider.

Department Chairman Badri Bitsadze said earlier that "10 million laris ($5.58 million) has been allocated for the Georgian border guard department's needs this year and 18 million laris ($10 million) will be allocated next year, while we need 45 million laris ($25.11 million) for normal functioning."
