MOSCOW. Jan 21 (Interfax-AVN) - Embezzlement and theft in the Russian Armed Forces are assuming a threatening scale, Prosecutor General Vladimir Ustinov said.
"If we added up what was stolen and squandered in the past two years alone, we would get one-third of the sum total of monthly money allowances to all servicemen, or over 1.7 billion rubles ($60.55 million)," he told a Friday conference at his office.
"In fact, the more money is allocated, the more people are willing to profit from it," Ustinov said.
He said almost 400 officials were held criminally responsible for theft last year.
