Developing countries back Russia - Syrian leader

MOSCOW. Jan 25 (Interfax-AVN) - Syrian President Bashar Al-Asad has voiced support for Russia's foreign policy strategy, which he described as balanced and logical.

"I would want to express support for Russia's political course and simultaneously my protest against the political course of the United States," he told students at the Moscow International Relations Institute on Tuesday.

"Russia's role in the world is great. Russia enjoys enormous authority, especially in third world countries," he said. "Those countries cherish the hope that Russia will regain its old position in the world," he said.

"We are perfectly aware of the strong foreign pressure exerted on your president, people and state," the Syrian leader said.

Asked if Syria feels threatened by a U.S. invasion, he said: "We are watching the policy of the United States with deep concern."
