Russian Navy top brass to gather for training session in St. Petersburg

MOSCOW. Jan 27 (Interfax-AVN) - High-ranking officers of all Russian fleets will gather for a mobilization training session at the Kuznetsov Naval Academy in St. Petersburg early next week, a spokesman for the Navy Staff said on Thursday.

Russian Navy Commander-in-Chief Vladimir Kuroyedov will fly to St. Petersburg on Friday to supervise the training session, the spokesman told Interfax-Military News Agency. The event will also involve Admiral Vladimir Valuyev, Baltic Fleet commander, Vice Admiral Mikhail Abramov, Northern Fleet commander, Admiral Vladimir Masorin, Black Sea Fleet commander, and Admiral Viktor Fyodorov, Pacific Fleet commander.

The training session will last until the end of next week. It is expected to feature consultations on choosing the nominee for the post of the Navy chief-of-staff. Admiral Viktor Kravchenko, current chief-of-staff, will quit military service this year as he has reached the retirement age.

The Navy commander-in-chief and the fleet commanders are expected to attend a session of the St. Petersburg Naval Assembly on February 4. The session marks the 10th anniversary of the board's re-establishment.

After that Kuroyedov will make a working trip to Severodvinsk, where Russia's latest submarines, namely the Severodvinsk multi-purpose one and the Yury Dolgoruky and Alexander Nevsky strategic ones, are under construction. In addition, the commander-in-chief is planning to study the progress in upgrading the Admiral Gorshkov aircraft carrier that Russia is to hand over to India.
