Seven militants killed in operation in Russia - source

NALCHIK. Jan 27 (Interfax-AVN) - Seven allegedly Islamic militants who had seized part of an apartment block in Nalchik, the capital of the North Caucasus region of Kabardino-Balkaria, were killed in an operation on Thursday to oust them out from the building, a regional police source said.

"Seven extremists were killed. Among them was the leader of the gang, Atayev, and his wife. Altogether four women and three men were killed," the source, speaking for the Kabardino-Balkarian Interior Ministry, told Interfax.

He said a canine police unit was searching the building and surrounding area for explosives. Some of the apartments in the block were being checked.
