N. Korea couldn't have bought nuclear arms in former Soviet nations – Yakovenko

MOSCOW. Jan 28 (Interfax-AVN) - Russia has denied media reports that North Korea could have purchased nuclear weapons in former Soviet countries.

"This information is not true," Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Yakovenko said.

"It is known that following the disintegration of the Soviet Union, only Russia has been storing nuclear weapons, which are thoroughly safeguarded there," he said.

"Nuclear weapons were removed from the territory of all the other CIS nations long ago. All these countries are signatories to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. Consequently, these countries do not have nuclear arms," the spokesman said.
