Russia, U.S. call for reliable barrier to nuclear proliferation

MOSCOW. Feb 25 (Interfax-AVN) - Russia and the United States are unanimous in the belief that there should be a reliable barrier to the spread of nuclear and missile technologies, Russian President Vladimir Putin told reporters in Bratislava on Thursday.

"We have a common approach to this problem. Nuclear proliferation will not improve the security situation for individual countries or on the international arena," Putin said.

Russia and the United States face an important task - to prevent nuclear weapons from falling into the hands of terrorists, he said.

He called the problem of terrorism one of the key problems in the Russian-U.S. dialogue.

"We agreed to build up coordination, including within the framework of the Russian-U.S. working group on combating terrorism," Putin said.

Commenting on a bilateral agreement on control over mobile anti- aircraft rocket systems, which was signed in Bratislava, he called it "an important practical step."

Putin and U.S. President George W. Bush also discussed the situation in Iraq and prospects for the Palestinian-Israeli settlement during their meeting on Thursday.
