Former police officer among guerillas killed in Nalchik

VOLGODONSK. Feb 25 (Interfax-South) - One of the three militants killed during a February 19-20 operation in an apartment building in Nalchik, the capital of the republic of Kabardino-Balkaria, was a former police officer, a Volgodonsk law enforcement source told Interfax on Thursday.

"Twenty-seven-year-old Viktor Sencheko served as a district police officer in the town of Volgodonsk until 2001. After he left interior affairs agencies, Senchenko moved to Rostov where his relative lives," the source said.

Senchenko is reported to have paid frequent visits to Chechnya, he said.

"Law enforcement agencies are investigating how this former police officer joined the guerrilla group," the source said.

A revolver stolen during a guerilla raid on the Ingush Interior Ministry last year and other weapons and ammunition were confiscated from the scene of the operation, the source said.
