Russia-NATO military officials convening extramural meeting in Moscow

MOSCOW. March 15 (Interfax-AVN) - The Russia-NATO Council will discuss interaction in combating terrorism and interoperability of the Russian Navy and other units at an extramural meeting, being convened in Moscow for the first time.

The Russian delegation is headed by Colonel General Anatoly Mazurkevich, chief of the Defense Ministry's International Military Cooperation Directorate, while the NATO delegation is headed by Lieutenant General Thomas Baptiste, Deputy Chairman of the NATO Military Committee.

"Today we have to cover the following two major issues - Russian-NATO cooperation in combating terrorism, as well as interoperability of the Russian Navy and NATO units in the course of joint operations," Mazurkevich said.

He noted that the very fact of a Russia-NATO meeting in Moscow demonstrated quite a high level of cooperation in various sphere of military cooperation between the parties concerned.

"NATO and Russia have made much progress in shifting from the Cold War-era standoff to close cooperation within a short period of time," Mazurkevich said.

Baptiste expressed his hope that Russia and NATO would continue further cooperation within the framework of the Russia-NATO Council.

On Tuesday the NATO delegation is to visit an air defense unit outside Moscow, equipped with S-300 surface-to-air missile systems.
